Russia sets its eyes on Boeing aircraft

A ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine still seems distant. The Russians, however, have reportedly already expressed specific wishes, including a potential agreement for the purchase of Boeing aircraft.

According to Bloomberg news agency, the Russians have put forward this request as part of a potential peace agreement with Ukraine. The country has reportedly shown interest in new aircraft from the American aircraft manufacturer. The specific model is not yet known. Russia intends to finance its planes with the over $280 billion in frozen Russian assets held in the United States.

This request comes at a notable moment, as the United States is engaged in an escalating trade war with China. Last week, China announced that. it would no longer allow new Boeing aircraft. Thereby, potentially offering Russia an opportunity to acquire these planes. However, there is sufficient competition. Airlines in India and Malaysia have also shown interest in the Boeing aircraft originally intended for the Chinese market.

Ceasefire

The American response to the Russian request was swift and clear. The United States emphasised that a restart of trade with Russia would only occur after an actual ceasefire in Ukraine has been reached. National Security Council spokesman Brian Hughes confirmed that message.

Despite earlier attempts by US President Trump to quickly force an agreement – which have significantly weakened Ukraine’s negotiating position – peace still seems distant. President Putin’s government repeatedly comes up with new conditions for a lasting ceasefire.

Sukhoi

If Russia actually decides to purchase new Boeings, it remains uncertain which models will be involved. The country has invested significantly in the development of its own Russian Sukhoi aircraft in recent years, including the Sukhoi Superjet program (MC 21), which has received substantial financial resources.
