Embraer has to lay off 900 employees in order to survive the current crisis, the company announced on Thursday.

In total, 4.5 percent of worldwide Embraer employees have to leave the company, amounting to approximately 900 workers. The decision was made in light of the current economic crisis resulting from the coronavirus pandemic. The commercial aviation branch of Embraer has seen a 75 percent year-on-year reduction in aircraft deliveries over the first half of 2020.

Embraer points specifically to Boeing as a worsening factor in the company’s restructuring. The American aircraft builder backed out of a joint venture with the Brazilian manufacturer earlier this year. A number of Embraer employees were specifically working in preparation for the partnership. The lawsuit about Boeing’s termination is still pending.
