Virgin Atlantic is the second airline in the world to offer customers a free “coronavirus insurance”. The company reimburses the medical and quarantine costs of passengers when they are struck by the coronavirus during their trip.

The maximum reimbursement for medical and related costs is 550,000 euros. That’s the highest coverage offered by an airline to date, according to the company. Virgin Atlantic will also compensate its passengers with up to 3,300 euros if they are refused a flight due to the virus or if they have to be quarantined during a trip.

In addition, travelers who have booked with the airline can use medical assistance at any time of the day. Even the repatriation is reimbursed by Virgin Atlantic, if there is a coronavirus infection. The insurance has been set up in collaboration with insurance company Allianz.

The free travel insurance is effective immediately and applies to all bookings up to and including March 31, 2021. The insurance also applies to tickets for codeshare flights with Delta Air Lines or Air France-KLM. At the beginning of this year, Air France-KLM, Delta and Virgin Atlantic started a joint venture on transatlantic flights.

Last month, Emirates already announced that it will reimburse passengers for medical and quarantine costs should passengers be infected with the coronavirus while traveling. “People are looking forward to traveling again, but they are also looking for flexibility and security if something unforeseen happens during their trip,” said board chairman Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum at the time.
