United Airlines CEO Scott. Kirby recently shared an internal, optimistic message amidst concerns about decreasing demand for flight tickets.

In his message, Kirby discussed the measures the airline would have taken in the past in such a situation. With a drop in demand, United would ‘shrink, furlough staff, cut the marketing budget, and drastically reduce investments,’ according to the CEO. However, he states that since the pandemic, United is well-prepared for these kinds of situations. The CEO aims to reassure staff by emphasising that the company will continue its growth strategy. ‘We will continue to receive new aircraft’ and ‘continue to invest in our product,’ Kirby said.

The CEO of United Airlines had previously acknowledged a decline in passenger numbers, particularly among business travellers and government employees. Other American airlines, such as American Airlines and Delta Air Lines, have also lowered their expectations for the coming period. Potential safety concerns among travellers, resulting from two aircraft incidents in the US earlier this year, are cited as one of the causes.

Additionally, recent White House policies are believed to be playing a role in the changing passenger numbers at United, among others. The Trump administration has significantly cut government budgets since taking office and has laid off many civil servants. This has impacted the number of travelling government employees. Moreover, economic uncertainty, partly caused by Trump’s import tariffs, is causing concerns about inflation and a decline in business and consumer confidence due to unpredictable political decisions.

Canada and Europe

Since the inauguration of Donald Trump, fewer Canadians are travelling to the United States. Westjet reported a significant drop in passenger numbers earlier this year and suspects that increasing tensions between Canada and the United States are the cause. These tensions arose after Donald Trump announced substantial tariff increases, including those for Canada. There is also a declining trend in the number of European travelers to the US, partly due to the high dollar exchange rate and the unpredictable political situation. Several European countries have also recently adjusted their travel advisories due to tightening border controls.
