Airbus Helicopters has announced its first completely new helicopter in nearly a decade. The H140 is a light twin-engine helicopter designed primarily for emergency services.

The new H140 is set to enter service in 2028 and will complement the existing H135, according to the world’s largest civilian helicopter manufacturer.

Not a Replacement

The new five-bladed H140 features a more spacious cabin than the H135 and is powered by Safran’s Arrius 2E engine. The launch follows an internal study, called X8, which explored a potential successor to the H135. However, Airbus is careful not to deter its existing customer base.

‘Don’t worry, we will continue offering this helicopter. We want to provide choice,’ said Airbus Helicopters CEO Bruno Even.

The move toward a new model comes two years after another study, X9, which focused on technologies for a future replacement of the larger and popular H145.

The H140 Will Be Built in Germany

Unlike other civilian helicopters from Airbus, which are primarily built in Marignane, France, the H140 will be manufactured in Germany. Airbus Helicopters remains the most profitable division of the aerospace group, reporting an 11% profit increase in 2023, alongside an 8% revenue growth. With the H140, Airbus is making a significant step toward modernizing its light twin-engine helicopter lineup.

Also a New Robinson Helicopter

Earlier this week, Robinson also unveiled a new helicopter, which will be the largest Robinson ever. In a notable departure from its traditional light helicopter designs, Robinson Helicopter introduced its latest model: the R88.

This entirely new design features a single-engine turbine and seating for ten passengers. The first flight could take place as early as this year, followed by certification and entry into service later this decade. Robinson has already begun accepting orders for the R88.
