“Airport Theory” TikTok trend causes missed connections

A burgeoning trend on TikTok, known as the “Airport Theory,” is leading to a surge in missed flights. Users attempt to cut their airport arrival times dangerously close.

The trend, popularised by certain “travel influencers,” challenges participants to arrive at the airport as late as humanly possible. At the same time, still catching their flight. These influencers document their daring feats. They showcase themselves lingering at home until the last minute, grabbing hurried refreshments at the airport, and sprinting to the gate just as boarding commences.

Some influencers brazenly claim to arrive at the airport mere moments before boarding. They are then facing the daunting task of navigating security checkpoints in record time. Others boast of arriving a mere fifteen minutes before gate closure. However, the “Airport Theory” has proven far less glamorous for many TikTok users who have attempted to replicate these feats. A growing collection of videos now depicts travelers stranded at airports. They missed their flights due to unexpectedly lengthy security lines and rushed timelines.

Warnings Issued Against the Trend

Social media platforms are now rife with warnings against this reckless trend. Not only do individuals who miss their flights face the inconvenience of rebooking their trip. But they also place undue strain on airline and airport staff. While it remains unclear whether the trend has directly caused flight delays, the potential for disruption is undeniable.

TikTok’s Ongoing Scrutiny

This trend arrives amidst ongoing scrutiny of TikTok. The app’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, faces accusations of user espionage. There are concerns that sensitive user data may be shared with the Chinese government. Consequently, airlines such as Delta and Southwest have prohibited employees from using the app. A complete ban on TikTok was briefly enacted in the United States in early 2025. President Trump then delayed the blockage and is now exploring the possibility of an American acquisition of the app.
